Things to bring and make ready

Hello everyone – OK, this post is to remind you of some things you will need to bring for class. I am providing the bulk of the supplies (digital cameras, animation paper, registration bars, animation pencils, Sharpie pens, colored paper and animation modeling clay), you will need to bring…

Supply List

  • Sketchbook (small – 5.5 x 8.5)
  • Color markers (set of 12 or 24)
  • Color pencils (set of 12 or 24) Optional
  • Eraser
  • Scotch Tape
  • Masking Tape 3/4 in
  • Elmer’s Glue Stick
  • Scissors
  • Stop Motion Studio – Cateater, LLCĀ  (iPhone/Android ap) Free version or Paid ($4.99)
  • Mini tripod (amazon)
  • Smart phone tripod mount adapter

For the digital aspects of the course… set-up or know your log in to any of the cloud services (Amazon, iCloud, Google Drive, etc…). If you are on a Mac platform (which is what we have in our computer lab), iCloud works best. You should have an Apple ID for iCloud. With iCloud, you will have online access to your photos and music is you are properly set up, plus you can share your work via iCloud as the three weeks progress. Google Drive and Amazon Prime work well too as cloud based storage of photos and music. You may want access to some music to use in your final iMovie movie. Also, bring a 8 or 16GB flash drive so as to backup and copy your final animations – in case something weird happens with your cloud storage.

Note: From JBA 2017 – I am working to have smart phones integrated into this course for 2018. There was a problem in session 2017, when logging into Google Drive, YouTube or iCloud on a “new” computer. The cel phones are necessary to receive the verification codes from Google, YouTube, or iCloud. I also plan to use the smart phone camera features and downloaded stop motion aps to process the introductory stop motion assignments (See the supply list above). I am expecting the smart phones to be much more capable than the small point-and-shoot cameras we have used up till now. Please have all old photos removed and/or saved/backed up to the cloud, so there is plenty of room on the smart phone to shoot 700 to 1000 photos.

Lastly, go to YouTube and create a YouTube account/channel so that you can upload your completed animations. Remember to have/know your YouTube log-in information and password.

Sorry for such a long post, but this information will help you prepare for all the fun animations we are about to make and you will easily be able to share it with your parents.

Post production Blues

We made it through all the shooting of the claymation stop-motion yesterday. The target was 3 minutes for the claymation, but that’s more of a “guideline” than actual rule (vague movie reference). The movies are looking very good. Can’t wait to watch them all on Friday. Today we move into the big computer lab and the students can start assembling all their animations into iMovie and they can add titles, transitions and audio in the post production process. There might still be a few wrapping up some of the assignments, so it is going to be a busy day, if I can keep everyone focused on getting it all wrapped up.

I love the smell of modeling clay in the morning!

Yesterday we spent all day shooting our claymation animation. The new cameras and software has really upped our game. The movies are looking great. We continue shooting today and wrapping up the stop-motion work. Tomorrow, we move into post production using iMovie to build our big video with audio, titles, sound effects, etc…

Class full of characters

On Saturday, we began the claymation portion of our class. Students were assigned groups and they met to discuss story ideas, develop characters for the story, storyboard the action, and designed the characters. On Monday, we built the wire-frame armatures for the 3D models and began with paper and tape to add lightweight bulk to the figures and then moved into the clay. The students start out with scratch clay (junk, previously used clay) and then layered on the good color clay to model out the final character.

A two wall, foamcore set was also designed and constructed. Today we begin shooting the animation. We have roughly 3 minutes to shoot, so this is planned to take today and tomorrow. On Thursday, we move all animation video into the Beta computer lab and the students will begin post production processing. I’ll get some photos posted today.

Cut it out!

The cut paper animation is progressing quickly for some, and not so much for others. The tedious work of moving each little piece of paper, over and over again is wearing a bit thin for some of the students. We have had a few technical problems (cameras, batteries, etc…), but on whole the project is proceeding as well as can be expected. Slugging through this assignment will certainly help the students decide if animation is a path to the future or not. The projects are looking pretty good. I had Emily Kunkel give me hers to include on this post. It was very well done.
